UiT The Arctic University of Norway

As one of the four major universities in Norway, UiT educates students in all classical disciplines:

  • medicine and health studies
  • humanities, social sciences and education
  • science and technology
  • law
  • economics
  • fine arts
  • sports and tourism

UiT is highly committed to research and education on the Arctic in change. Research and education has shaped the character of the city of Tromsø for 4 decades. Tromsø hosts also the Fram High North Research Centre on Climate and the Environment with over 20 national research institutes connected. The university attracts an increasing number of students from the south and abroad. 25% of UiT's staff is international.

In recent years, UiT has merged with several University Colleges in Northern-Norway and transformed into a multi-campus university with 15 500 students. From 1.1.2016 we are offering exchange studies and English taught programmes in 4 different locations in Northern Norway: Tromsø, Alta, Narvik and Harstad.

The High North is a highly international region, dedicated to cross-border and circumpolar cooperation. With increased international attention on climate change and the geopolitical impact of the region, the Arctic is a hot spot of development. With the Arctic Council Secretariat in town, Tromsø is becoming more and more a capital of the Circumpolar North. Our students learn about global issues through contact with local environments and northern societies.

UiT is one of the founding members of the University of the Arctic (UArctic) , a cooperative network of universities, colleges, research institutions and organisations concerned with education and research in and about the North.
