The Skridfinns – a Sami ski history

Join us on our ski tour for the whole family through history, Sami ski history, on Sunday 21st of March at the Arctic University Museum of Norway. Please bring your skis. Registration at the ticket counter. Our ski café is open, serving Bidos. Welcome!

There can be no doubt that ski and skiing is a vital part of the culture in Norway. Through several generations, we’ve heard about the history of ski sports, all the skiing heroes and expeditions on skis.  We have heard of how “Norwegians are born with skis on”.

A less known story is the Sami skiing history. What do we know about the use of skis among the Sami, and who were the Skridfinns?

At this event we’ll share stories you probably have never heard before. Did you know that ski poles may be put to many other uses than just supporting the skier’s progress? In this guided tour through powdery snow and uneven grounds, you’ll not only be learning about skis, bindings, ski poles and ski boots, but you’ll also learn what the snow itself has meant to the Sami people. What names and words are there for snow, and how were they used?

We’ll give you an enjoyable end educational tour, and perhaps leave you with a refreshed view on the common culture and history in Northern Norway.
