Nordnorsk kunstmuseums exhibition "28%" brings attention to the disparity of women artists represented in our collection, which currently numbers 2,255 works, with only 28% created by women artists.

There are less women in our collection than men, and there is less knowledge about them. These are imbalances which are reflected in contemporary society. And yet, one of the most important things that global society must do to bring prosperity and harmony to the world is to work on gender equality, as clearly stated in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

At Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, we think that openness is essential to encourage social interaction and critical discussion. We see exhibitions as a place for experimentation and a tool for addressing collection imbalances. To do this, we collaborate closely with researchers and UiT art history students, using their insights to get fresh viewpoints and understanding of the gaps in our collection.

Now you can read the texts in the exhibition, written by bachelor (now master) student, Jarl Riskjell Gjerde, who was an intern with us this spring. He produced texts about the artworks and the artists featured in the "28%" exhibition, including: Synnøve Anker-Aurdal, Gunvor Bull-Teilman, Nora Gulbrandsen, Frida Hansen, Ragnhild Kaarbø, Dorothea Ording, Hélène Perdriat, Signe Scheel, Solveig Wiik.

The tour will be in English.
