CRAFT & ENCODE present: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

The research groups CRAFT and ENCODE (both UiT) invite you to the screening of Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey (UK & USA 1968) at Verdensteatret Cinematek on Tuesday, November 26 from 17:30.

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is widely hailed as a science fiction masterpiece. The film sees humanity launch a voyage to Jupiter to understand a strange, monolithic alien artifact. Along the way, we are introduced to one of the most influential artificial intelligences in film: HAL 9000. The film invites us into a future vision of a world with realistic space travel that anticipates many of our fears about the actions and motivations of intelligent AI, while confronting humanity with evidence of the strangeness of an unknowable universe.

Loïs Vanhèe (Umeå University) will provide an introduction to the film. After the screening we will have time for a brief Q&A and discussion of the film.

Tickets and trailer available at VT's website.

The screening is an initiative of the CRAFT and ENCODE research groups at UiT. For earlier screenings in the series Future Perspectives, see here.
