Populærvitenskaplig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

More than a million Rohingya refugees live in the world's largest refugee camp in Bangladesh — stateless, confined, and rarely heard. This dissertation asks how they nevertheless make themselves heard: through poetry, song, painting, murals, and photography. Drawing on 61 interviews with camp artists, aid workers, and diaspora artists across three rounds of fieldwork (2023–2025), and a case study of the camp-based Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre, the study shows that art has become a vital channel for voice, memory, and identity. Refugees compose songs about lost homes in Myanmar, paint the walls of the camps, and share their work with the world through social media. Yet their voice is negotiated: aid organizations' policies, camp rules, and other constraints shape what can be said — and who gets heard. The findings can help aid agencies and policymakers support artistic expression.
