Open Science Lunch – For researchers, by researchers: Is Diamond Open Access the future of academic publishing?

In this Open Science Lunch, we look into Diamond Open Access publishing – publishing with neither author nor reader payment – and the movement of journals «flipping» from Toll Access or Gold OA to Diamond. We will also hear about a programme for supporting Diamond OA journals.

About the topic

There are several indicators that the academic publishing industry is in crisis. The rise of Article Processing Charges (APCs) as an alternative finance stream instead of paywalling, has skewed the incentives towards volume and efficiency in expense of quality, the underwood of questionable and predatory journals is thriving, journals have a hard time finding peer reviewers, and so called Transformative Deals are not as transformative as one had hoped. In Diamond OA journals, there is neither APCs nor paywalls, and the funding comes from other sources (universities, societies, foundations etc.). Many have suggested Diamond OA as one of the solutions to many of the challenges of the academic publishing industry of today.

But for Diamond OA to thrive, one needs stable funding, and, not the least, bottom-up initiatives from researchers themselves to found and run new Diamond OA journals, or «flip» existing journals to Diamond OA from other funding models.

Participants

Per Pippin Aspaas is a senior academic librarian at UiT, where one of his responsibilities is developing services for Diamond Open Access publishing. He is the head of UiT’s Diamond Programme and a host for the podcast series Open Science Talk.

TBA. We will come back with the second participant when confirmed.

Grab your ‘matpakke’, listen to the talks, and join the Q&A to share your thoughts and questions!

How to join

The event is open to everybody and you can join online on Teams.

About Open Science Lunch

Each last Thursday of the month at 12.00 we invite you to join us an open lunch to hear about how to make your research more open. We will discuss research transparency and visibility, open publishing, data sharing, and more! After each short presentation we will have a Q&A session, where you can ask questions or try yourself some of the tools and solutions we will present!
