Beyond the Hype: What is Quantum Computing?

Quantum computing promises to solve problems beyond the reach of today's computers. Governments and industry are investing billions in the race to develop quantum technologies and achieve quantum advantage. But beyond the headlines and the hype... what is quantum computing actually all about?

Join us for a lively introduction to the strange world of quantum information. We'll discover how qubits differ from ordinary bits, explore the three key ideas of quantum computing — superposition, measurement, and entanglement — and see how these lead to new possibilities for computation and cryptography.  Along the way, we'll separate the science from the hype and glimpse some of the elegant mathematics behind the buzzwords. All are welcome.  No prior knowledge of mathematics or physics is required — just curiosity.

Dennis The is a professor of mathematics at UiT, where his research focuses on symmetry and differential geometry.  He recently taught Introduction to Quantum Computing (MAT-2400), an experience that inspired him to share the subject with a broader audience.  When he's not thinking about mathematics, you'll probably find him playing pickleball or travelling -- patiently waiting for quantum teleportation to make travel easier.
