TEK-3006 Cold Climate Engineering - 10 ECTS
Course content
The course will give a thorough overview on and understanding of the physical environment in cold climate and arctic regions with emphasis on the differences between the design conditions and the operational conditions. The cause of and conditions during Polar Low pressure will be discussed: Stability aspects caused by icing of vessels. Operation planning in view of potential for polar low pressures, statistics of operations. Discussion of winterization needs for offshore structures and vessels. Requirements to emergency systems for Arctic conditions. Human factors when working in cold climate regions. Formation and growth of ice and the properties of ice. Sea ice features and icebergs in the Barents Sea. Loading from drifting ice. International standard for Arctic Offshore Structures. Objectives of the course
Give the participants insight into the following aspects of cold climate engineering: - Design and work in cold climate and covers both offshore and onshore related aspects - Conceptual thinking with the aim of identifying sound solutions rather than on detailed design for cold climate and arctic regions. Those interested in detailed design will be referred to appropriate rules and standards - Operational aspects, including maintenance, of working in cold climate and arctic regionsExamination
