Admission requirements
Water and sewage technology
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in construction engineering, civil engineering, water and sewerage engineering, environmental engineering, HVAC engineering and energy technology. Applicants with other subject combinations (water sciences, sanitary and environmental sciences, hydrology / hydraulics, etc.) are considered separately.
Regulations on admission to studies at UiT state that in order to be admitted to a master's degree program of 120 credits, there are requirements for specialization in subjects, courses or subject groups of a minimum of 80 credits or integrated education of a minimum of 120 credits. For the field of study Water and Sewerage Technology, the requirement for professional specialization in construction, water and sewerage technology, civil engineering and HVAC applies. Applicants with other specializations can be admitted after special assessment. Basic knowledge of water and drainage technology is recommended.
In addition, there is a requirement for basic knowledge of at least 25 credits in mathematics (cf. Mathematics 1, 2 and 3), at least 5 credits in statistics / probability and at least 7.5 credits in physics in accordance with the framework plan for the Bachelor of Engineering.

Course content
The course aiming to provide knowledge about drinking water treatment, combining the conventional and newly emerging water treatment technologies. The course discusses raw water quality, relevant unit processes involved, and their role and location in a typical treatment chain. The performance of each unit in the design and operation phases, also deals with how can be optimized to achieve the desired quality of drinking water.
The course includes the following topics: general outline of water supply; raw water source selection and positioning intake valves; the concept of water demand; water storage structures, and reservoir design; conventional water treatment: coagulation and flocculation, clariflocculation, filtration (slow and rapid gravity filter, multi-media filters and pressure filters), disinfection units; advanced methods of water treatment (advanced oxidation processes, removal of iron and manganese, hardness, fluorides, colour, taste and odour, dissolved metals and gases, etc).
Objectives of the course
After passing the course, students must have the following learning outcomes.
Knowledge:
The students will have detailed knowledge about the raw water source selection and management, unit processes most relevant for drinking water treatment, and the distribution system. They will be able to analyze the underlying principles, as well as well as to design and optimize these processes.
Professional skills:
The students will be able to select appropriate raw water sources, aligning a series of treatment steps based on given raw water quality and a targeted treatment goal, and options of distribution network setup. They will be able to evaluate the available treatment options, select an appropriate alternative and defend their choice.
General competence:
The students will have acquired key engineering skills. They will be able to work in a team, present and defend their work, evaluate the work of others and give constructive feedback, analysis engineering problems that may be incompletely stated, make estimates and appreciate their value and limitations and interpret and evaluate experimental results.
Teaching methods
Lectures 4 x 1 week (a total of 20 working days), including team-based learning and exercises. To learn to work on larger projects and in a realistic setting, project work is a part of the course, and students tackle a real-life problem and plan, refine and develop a solution.
Exercises with a computer programme for process simulation, excursion to treatment plants to learn how unit processes are integrated and operational challenges
