About the course

The course can be taken as a single course.

The course explores creative methods in research, education and communication, and works as a testbed for the co-creation of interdisciplinary projects within UiTs Center for Arctic Humanities. Students from different disciplines work together on how research questions can be formulated, investigated and communicated through creative and co-creative methods.

Admission requirements

Students must either be enrolled in, or have completed, a bachelor’s degree programme of at least 180 ECTS in a discipline within the arts, humanities or sciences.

Admission requirements: Demonstrated interest in creative methods, motivation, autonomy, agency, and diversity of interests, balanced distribution of research fields, balanced distribution across partners.

Objectives of the course

After passing the course, the student has the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

- Describes central creative and co-creative methods used in research, education and science communication

- Explains how creative methods can be applied to interdisciplinary research questions

- Accounts for the role of Indigenous knowledges and storytelling in the production and communication of knowledge

- Explains the requirements of research ethics and accountability when working co-creatively with communities and collections

Skills

- Formulates and refines a research question through questioning and other co-creative techniques

- Applies at least one creative method (e.g. object handling, question walks, field-based inquiry, collaborative writing) to a research or communication problem

- Communicates research results to an interdisciplinary and non-specialist audience

- Produces a publishable creative research output in collaboration with others

General competence

- Collaborates across disciplinary, institutional and cultural boundaries

- Reflects critically on their own disciplinary assumptions and methodological choices

- Manages a short co-creative project from idea to published output

- Makes use of research and professional networks across academic institutions

Teaching methods

The course is conducted as an intensive blended workshop combining an online preparatory seminar with on-site workshop days, a dedicated output day and subsequent publication activities.

The methods are workshop-based and collaborative, which supports the learning outcomes on applying creative methods, working across disciplines and communicating research to different audiences, including non-specialists.

Schedule

The schedules are normally finalized and published well in advance of the start of the semester, often a few weeks beforehand. This gives students the opportunity to organize their studies and prepare for upcoming activities.

It is recommended to check the schedule regularly, as changes may occur.

Final exam

The course is closed and the last opportunity to take the exam after this semester is autumn 2027

This course is organized as part of international projects coordinated by HSL faculty and open to incoming exchange students.

Attendance at all parts of the course, including the online preparatory seminar, is obligatory.

Active participation in the on-site workshop days, output day and publication work is required.

The student delivers an individual creative research output with an accompanying reflective text of approx. 5 pages, documenting the method used, the co-creative process and the choices made in communicating the work. The output is prepared for publication in Septentrio Creative.

Group work: the output may be developed collaboratively, but each student delivers an individual reflective text. Maximum group size: 4.

Re-sit examination

A re-sit examination will not be arranged.
