Admission requirements

Water and sewage technology

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in construction engineering, civil engineering, water and sewerage engineering, environmental engineering, HVAC engineering and energy technology. Applicants with other subject combinations (water sciences, sanitary and environmental sciences, hydrology / hydraulics, etc.) are considered separately.

Regulations on admission to studies at UiT state that in order to be admitted to a master's degree program of 120 credits, there are requirements for specialization in subjects, courses or subject groups of a minimum of 80 credits or integrated education of a minimum of 120 credits. For the field of study Water and Sewerage Technology, the requirement for professional specialization in construction, water and sewerage technology, civil engineering and HVAC applies. Applicants with other specializations can be admitted after special assessment. Basic knowledge of water and drainage technology is recommended.

In addition, there is a requirement for basic knowledge of at least 25 credits in mathematics (cf. Mathematics 1, 2 and 3), at least 5 credits in statistics / probability and at least 7.5 credits in physics in accordance with the framework plan for the Bachelor of Engineering.

Recommended prerequisites: A basic course in chemistry and biology; water treatment or equivalent knowledge; water chemistry or equivalent knowledge; fluid mechanics.


Course content

A centralized wastewater treatment system is a type of sewerage system in which wastewater from multiple sources, such as residential, commercial, and industrial facilities, is collected and conveyed through a network of underground pipes to a centralized wastewater treatment plant for processing and treatment. This system is commonly used in urban and suburban areas where a large population and numerous facilities generate significant amounts of wastewater. The specific design and capacity of centralized wastewater treatment plants can vary widely depending on the size and needs of the community or region they serve.

This course focuses on centralized wastewater treatment plant operation and design, offering a comprehensive theoretical and practical foundation for wastewater treatment. The course content encompasses the theories associated with the design and operational processing units, including physical, chemical, and biological processes. Furthermore, the course will address sludge handling and treatment.

Excursion to treatment plants to learn how unit processes are integrated into practice and operational challenges.


Objectives of the course

After passing the course, students must have the following learning outcomes.

Knowledge:

Gaining knowledge about the concept and purpose of different treatment processes used in centralized wastewater treatment, including physical, chemical, and biological methods. Understanding the mechanisms and technologies involved in each treatment stage

Professional skills:

Be able to design and plan centralized wastewater treatment plants.

Can understand the factors influencing the performance of different treatment stages.

Able to choose suitable process combinations and understand the possibilities and limitations of different unit processes and their compatibility when integrating the systems.

Be able to develop problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues that may arise in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities and implement effective solutions to address operational challenges.

General competence:

Acquire a broad set of competencies that enable students to contribute significantly to the efficient and sustainable management of centralized wastewater treatment systems, ensuring the protection of public health, environmental conservation, and adherence to regulatory standards.

Teaching methods

Lectures 4 x 1 weeks (a total of 20 working days), including team-based learning and exercises.

Students are expected to actively participate in the lectures. Participation in all course seminars and the field trip is mandatory.
