Selma Olsen Barne

Job description

I am an intensive care nurse and PhD candidate at the Department of Health and Care Sciences, affiliated with the master’s programme in nursing and the research group Acute and Critically Ill.

I am particularly interested in how simulation and active learning approaches can support the development of students’ clinical reasoning and prepare them to care for acutely and critically ill patients.

Research interests

My research interests include clinical reasoning, simulation and learning in nursing education. In my PhD project, I investigate how virtual reality (VR) simulation, used as preparation for and a supplement to conventional simulation, can support the development of nursing students’ clinical reasoning in the care of acutely and critically ill patients.

The project includes the translation and validation of measurement instruments, the development and piloting of simulation activities, and the evaluation of students’ learning outcomes.

My PhD research is part of XRHealthEdu, an international collaborative project involving UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the University of Oulu and Lapland University of Applied Sciences. I am affiliated with the research group Acute and critically ill.

Teaching

I contribute to teaching in the master’s programme in intensive care nursing, including simulation, clinical skills training, and the planning and delivery of Emergency and Preparedness Week.
