Roald A. Øien
Job description
Dr. Roald A. Øien, PhD, is Professor of Special Education and Developmental Psychology at the Department of Education at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, where he earned his PhD in Psychology. He also holds positions as Clinical Professor at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) and Assistant Professor of Developmental Disabilities at Yale Child Study Center. Dr. Øien began his affiliation with Yale University as a Research Scientist during his PhD and has spent time living and working in New Haven.
Dr. Øien’s research focuses on developmental psychology and special education, particularly early developmental, behavioral, and temperamental features in children with and without neurodevelopmental disorders. His clinical expertise includes Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Tourette Syndrome.
A significant aspect of Dr. Øien’s scholarly contributions is in the early identification and understanding of autism spectrum disorders. His research often explores the intersection of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, striving to enhance diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents. His extensive publications cover topics such as gender dysphoria in individuals with autism, substance use problems in those with ASD, and the application of virtual reality in therapeutic settings for neurodevelopmental disorders.
Dr. Øien is a Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (JADD), one of the leading journals in the field of autism research.
He has delivered keynote speeches at prestigious institutions including Yale University, University College London (UCL), King's College, and Stony Brook University. Additionally, Dr. Øien has served as an ambassador for Norway in the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR), reflecting his dedication to promoting global collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of autism research.
In 2024, Dr. Øien joined the Early Childhood Peace Consortium (ECPC), a global network dedicated to leveraging scientific and practice-based evidence to promote sustainable peace, social cohesion, and social justice through early childhood development (ECD).
