Professor Muhammad Virk is working at the Institute of Industrial Technology, where he is leading the Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group. He is also a member of UiT Arctic Center for Sustainable Energy. He holds the Bachelor and Master degress in Aerospace Engineering and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. At UiT, he has estabished the research activities and infrastructure related to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Wind Energy and Atmospheric Icing on Structures. With his experience of CFD based numerical modeling of complex turbulent flows behavior and heat transfer, he is also having a good understanding of the aircraft design and aspects related to high speed aerodynamics from his aerospace engineering background. Presently, he is leading the Arctic technology and Icing research group at UiT, where his research work is focused on multiphase CFD based numerical analysis, wind energy, aerodynamics, heat transfer issues related to ice accumulation on structures in cold regions. This includes the analytical, experimental & numerical analyses. On European level, he has establised the ‘Nordic Wind Energy Research Center’, in collaboration between Norway, Sweded and Finland. Professor Virk is also engaged in various applied research projects co funded by industry and various national and European funding agencies. During last 08 years, he has successfully managed and participated as principal & co-investigator in 10 different international research projects funded by European Union, Norwegian Research Council and industry. Presently he is the author of 150 scientific publications. He has received numerous scientific prizes including best paper awards. His most recent in this regard is the winning of EU Arctic Award 2018 from Europen Union, for one of his research project focused on wind energy in cold climate.
