The teaching is research-based, and bachelor-level courses are available as online studies. The main goal of the department in education is to train technologists for the private sector, public administration, research, and teaching. Through this, the department aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The department's R&D activities are organized into two main groups:

• Intelligent Manufacturing and Logistics
• Arctic Technology

Through the department's laboratory facilities, students and researchers have access to advanced and fully automated production equipment, such as robots, 3D printers, and CNC-controlled machines.

The department works closely with local and regional businesses, both through subject-based projects as well as student projects, research projects, and development projects.

Internationally, the institute has contact and collaboration with a number of educational institutions in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Italy, England, the USA, Japan, Hungary, and Spain.
