🏦 Student Deposit Account for Non-EU/EEA exchange students

If you are an incoming exchange student from outside the EU/EEA, you may be required by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) to document sufficient funds for your stay in Norway. For many students, this means transferring money to a Norwegian student deposit account.

UDI requires many non-EU/EEA students to prove that they can financially support themselves during their stay in Norway.

Deposit amounts are based on UDI's financial requirements and may change each year.

Before you transfer

You must have received an admission offer from UiT.
The transfer must be made in your own name exactly as it appears in your passport.
No interest is earned on deposited funds.
Your bank may charge transfer fees. Make sure the full required amount reaches the account in Norway.

Important: Provide your bank with the correct IBAN and SWIFT/BIC details.

International bank transfers can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on your country's banking system.

Once the funds have arrived, the Arctic Student Welfare Organisation (Samskipnaden) will issue a Confirmation of Deposit and send it to you by email.

Important: You must submit the Confirmation of Deposit as supporting documentation when submitting your application for a study permit.

💳 Bring a debit or credit card

We strongly recommend bringing a debit or credit card that is valid for international use.

Most ATMs and payment terminals in Norway accept international cards.

💵 Bring some Norwegian kroner (NOK)

It is a good idea to bring some Norwegian currency for expenses during your first few days in Norway.

Important: Exchange your money into Norwegian kroner (NOK) in your home country or at Oslo Gardermoen Airport before travelling to your final destination in Norway.

After arriving in Norway, you may order a Danske Bank Prepaid Card to access the money in your deposit account.

One-time fee: NOK 200
Can be used in shops and ATMs
Can be used at terminals displaying BankAxept

If you are unable to start your studies at UiT, you may apply for a refund of your deposit.

A processing fee of NOK 350 will be deducted.
The refunded amount may vary because of exchange-rate fluctuations and bank charges.
