HOW TO APPLY FOR THE CORRECT VISA (IMPORTANT !)

It is your responsibility to check which type of visa (NON-EU-EEA students) or registration (EU-EEA students) you will need and how to get it. If you arrive at UiT The Arctic University of Norway without the appropriate visa which permits you to study in Norway for the duration of your exchange, you may face troubles with the local Immigration Office at the Police Department. In some cases, you may have to leave Norway and re-enter in order to get your immigration permission corrected.

If you are not sure about which visa option you should apply to, please send an email to mobility@uit.no.

Choose the correct category to apply:

You are not required to apply for any visa to enter Norway for exchange studies or traineeships. If you plan to live in Norway for more than six months, you must visit your local  Tax Administration Office for ID verification and to submit a change of address notification (external website) no later than eight days after your arrival in Norway. You have to book an appointment beforehand on the same website before.

You need to do the following AFTER your arrival to Norway:

  1. You must create a "User Registration" account to register your stay if you are going to stay in Norway for more than THREE MONTHS on this website: Students who are EU/EEA nationals - UDI
  2. You must also make an appointment ont the same website with the local police in the city where your campus is located.

PLEASE NOTE: You are NOT required to make the registration if you are going to stay in Norway for less than 90 DAYS.

APPLY FOR STUDY PERMIT: NON-EU / EEA STUDENTS

You MUST apply for Study Permit BEFORE your arrival to Norway if:

  1. You are a national of a NON-EU / EEA country
  2. You are accepted by UiT as an exchange student and going to take course modulles or seminars with at least 30 ECTS
  3. You are going to stay in Norway for MORE than 90 days, meaning 1 semester or 2 semesters

PLEASE NOTE! NON-EU/EEA Erasmus+ students coming from European universities: you MUST apply for Study Permit before your arrival to Norway even if you have a valid student residence permit in a from the Schengen country of your study.

How to apply for a Study Permit:

  • Do you have questions about the Study Permit application process? Please contact the Norwegian Directorate for Immigration (UDI) directly on their website:  Contact us - UDI

You may need the following information to apply for visa:

  • UiT organisation number: 970 422 528
  • UiT contact email: mobility@uit.no
  • Your address in Norway: C/O: The Arctic Student Welfare Organisation of Norway, Teorifagbygget House 2, 9010 Tromsø, Norway.
  • Your date of arrival: see your acceptance letter.

STUDENT DEPOSIT SERVICE (OPTIONAL): NON-EU / EEA STUDENTS

This service is OPTIONAL for NON-EU exchange students! You are not required to use this service if you do not want to.

You or your university may deposit scholarships/stipend/funds into the Student Deposit account. Once the deposit is received, a Confirmation of Deposit will be issued and sent to you by email. You can attach the confirmation to your visa application to apply for Student Visa (Study Permit). After arrival to Norway, you will recieve a debit card to be able to withdraw your money from ATM machines and pay your housing rents.

You MUST apply for "Trainees" Visa BEFORE your arrival to Norway if:

  1. You are a national of a NON-EU / EEA country
  2. You are udner 30 years old
  3. You are not a PhD student
  4. You are accepted by UiT as an exchange student and going to engage in a traineeship (i.e. placement or internship) at UiT as part of your education at your home university
  5. You are going to stay in Norway for MORE than 90 days, meaning 1 semester or 2 semesters

PLEASE NOTE! NON-EU/EEA Erasmus+ students coming from European universities: you MUST apply for Trainees Visa before your arrival to Norway even if you have a valid student residence permit in a from the Schengen country of your study.

How to apply for a Trainees Visa:

You SHOULD apply for "Researcher with own funds" Visa BEFORE your arrival to Norway if:

  1. You are a national of a NON-EU / EEA country
  2. You are over 30 years old
  3. You have completed your master's degree and currently a PhD student
  4. You are going to stay in Norway for MORE than 90 days, meaning 1 semester or 2 semesters

PLEASE NOTE! NON-EU/EEA Erasmus+ students coming from European universities: you MUST apply for "research with own funds" Visa before your arrival to Norway even if you have a valid student residence permit in a from the Schengen country of your study.

How to apply for a "Researcher with own funds" Visa:

You may need the following information to apply for visa:

  • UiT organisation number: 970 422 528

  • Your address in Norway: C/O: The Arctic Student Welfare Organisation of Norway, Teorifagbygget House 2, 9010 Tromsø, Norway.
  • Your date of arrival: see your acceptance letter.

You MUST apply for Visitor's Visa BEFORE your arrival to Norway if:

  1. You are a national of a NON-EU / EEA country
  2. You are accepted by UiT as an exchange student and going to take course modulles/ seminars OR going to engage in a traineeship (i.e. placement or internship) at UiT as part of your education at your home university
  3. You are going to stay in Norway for LESS than 90 days, meaning less than 1 semester

PLEASE NOTE! NON-EU/EEA Erasmus+ students coming from European universities: you are NOT required to apply for Visitor's Visa If you have a valid student residence permit from the Schengen country of your study.

How to apply for a Visitor's Visa:

You may need the following information to apply for visa:
