Department of Physics and Technology has over 120 employees, where 35 are permanently scientific researchers, 5 are administrative employees and 5 are technicians working with our labs and technical equipment. The remaining are temporary employees in PhD, Post Doc and other research positions.

The community is international, where 50% are foreign from every continent. The research groups and administration is based in two locations, Teknologibygget and Forskningsparken, both located in Breivika in Tromsø. The science groups located  at teknologibygget are:

• Space Physics
• Modelling of Complex Systems
• Machine Learning

Department of Physics and Technology and the research conducted in Tromsø have deep historical roots in research on nothern lights (Aurora Borealis) from the beginning of the 20th century.
