Education – Department of Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences offers education at the bachelor-, masters- and PhD-levels. We educate future geologists and geophysicists. Our graduates go on to work in the oil industry, food companies, consulting companies, public offices within road construcion and infrastructure, geohazards, research, teaching and many other private companies.

The bachelor program in geology at UiT covers all the major topics in the field, and provides students with a solid and unified foundation in geology.  The development of both theoretical and practical skills is emphasized through a combination of lectures, seminars, lab exercises and field work.

With a completed masters degree in geology, the candidate will have solid competency within a well-defined area of geology.  The program consists of a masters thesis (60 ECTS), as well as mandatory and elective courses (60 ECTS). The number of elective courses varies in the different sub-disciplines. It is possible to take courses at the Svalbard campus or educational institutions abroad.

There are four areas of study within our masters program:

  • Bedrock Geology
  • Arctic Marine Geology & Geophysics
  • Sedimentology & Quaternary Geology.
  • Petroleum Geosciences
