ANDREW P. GILMAN (BSc, MSc, PhD)

Dr. Gilman is a Research Fellow at the University of Tromso Department of Community Medicine and at the University of Ottawa Population Health Institute. He is also President of a small international consulting firm Sustainable Solutions International. He is applying his 42 years of experience (including 32 years in government) and his academic and research background in toxicology and epidemiology to develop and implement projects in Canada and abroad.
He has been actively involved internationally in risk assessment and developing regional and global initiatives to control the long-range transport of environmental contaminants that can affect human health and the environment. Much of his risk assessment work has been directed at health issues in the circumpolar Arctic. Another focus has been on children’s health issues related to the environment. He has expertise on metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and uranium. He has been involved in numerous public consultations and workshops as a delegate and a facilitator and in capacity building projects in Russia, the Philippines, Kenya, China, Mexico, and Thailand. He is a consultant to the UN Environment Program on chemicals management and climate change. In Canada, he has also been responsible for developing new programs related to population health and sustainable development in the Arctic, the Great Lakes Basin, and the St Lawrence River Basin.
Dr. Gilman received his Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and his Master of Science degree in Toxicology from the University of Western Ontario. His PhD was completed at the University of Guelph’s OntarioVeterinaryCollege, Department of Pathology, in 1975. He has published and presented numerous scientific and policy papers and given guest lectures at several Canadian and European universities.
