Roald A. Øien
Job description
How do children develop language, attention and social understanding, and why can children with the same diagnosis follow very different developmental pathways? These questions guide my research. I am Professor of Special Education and Developmental Psychology in the Department of Education at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. My work connects child development, mental health and everyday functioning.
I study autism, ADHD and Tourette syndrome, alongside developmental characteristics that cut across diagnostic categories. My research addresses early identification, language and communication, emotion regulation and sex differences. A central aim is to understand both shared patterns and individual variation, so that assessment and support can better reflect each child’s needs.
I provide scientific leadership for UNI-MA and lead MINDScape. UNI-MA examines early development across multiple domains using the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). MINDScape investigates development and everyday functioning after childhood cancer, in collaboration with clinical teams at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN). Both projects bring developmental science and statistical methods to questions that matter to children, families and the services supporting them.
I received my PhD in Health Sciences, specialising in psychology, from UiT in 2018. My thesis examined sex differences, screening and diagnosis in autism. Alongside my UiT appointment, I am Clinical Professor affiliated with adult habilitation services (HAVO) at UNN and Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the Yale Child Study Center. My collaboration with Yale began in 2014 as a Visiting Research Scientist.
I teach and supervise master’s and doctoral students and serve as Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. I have also held Global Senior Leader and Norwegian ambassador roles within the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR).

Research interests
Development over time and across diagnoses
My research examines how language, social communication, attention, motor skills and emotion regulation develop from early childhood. I work extensively with longitudinal data from MoBa, following the same children across several years and linking developmental information with registry records. I am particularly interested in differences that matter in everyday life and in how our measurement choices shape the findings.
UNI-MA – a multidimensional understanding of early development
Within UNI-MA, I am responsible for scientific leadership, data analysis, statistical programming and supervision. We are developing a framework for describing children’s development across several domains, from infancy to school age. We begin with the skills and difficulties captured by questionnaire items, before examining their associations with diagnoses.
The programme asks which developmental characteristics are shared across autism, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, and which distinguish groups and individuals. A central methodological question is whether measures provide comparable information at different ages and for girls and boys. Further planned work addresses co-occurring mental health difficulties and documentation that will allow other researchers to scrutinise and reuse the methods.
MINDScape – development and everyday functioning after childhood cancer
I lead MINDScape at UiT in close collaboration with paediatric oncology and adult habilitation services (HAVO) at UNN. The project aims to examine how children function after a cancer diagnosis compared with peers without childhood cancer. By linking MoBa data with national registries, we plan to study language, motor skills, attention, and emotional and social functioning across childhood and adolescence. School functioning, sleep and quality of life are also important aspects of this work.
The aim is to identify areas that warrant closer attention in long-term follow-up. Where information predating diagnosis is available, it can help distinguish earlier developmental characteristics from difficulties that become apparent later. My responsibilities centre on the developmental framework, methodological integration and scientific interpretation. MINDScape is being developed as an observational study, rather than a trial of a new treatment.
Related research
My wider work covers autism screening and diagnosis, gender diversity and mental health, language and literacy, and virtual and augmented reality interventions for people with neurodevelopmental disorders. Across these areas, I emphasise sound measurement, transparent and reproducible analysis, and findings that can be interpreted meaningfully in clinical and educational settings.
