Job description
Eva Sjøttem is Head of Department, Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Health Science. She is a professor in molecular cell biology at the Autophagy Research Group. Her research is within basic biomedical research. It involves identification of molecular mechanisms regulating the cellular renovation system autophagy, with main focus on the selectivity in this process. Dysregulation of selectiv autophagy is implicated in major human diseases such as neurodegeneration, cancer, cardiac diseases and inflammation, and contributes also to aging.

Research interests
Research interests:
Characterisation of molecular mechanisms involved in selectivity and regulation of the intracellular process autophagy. Autophagy is a crucial process for cellular homeostasis. It selectively degrades intracellular destroyed or dangerous components, infectious agents or excess components. Autophagy is important for cell survival during various cellular stresses like starvation, infection and oxygen deprivation. Disregulated autophagy is implicated in various diseases like neurodegenerative diseases, Cardiac diseases, and cancer. Furthermore, autophagy has impact on iflammation ang ageing. Our Research Group has a specific focus on understanding the functional mechanisms of selective autophagy receptors, and how their expression and biological activities are regulated upon stress.
