Osteoporotic fractures constitute a major health- and economic burden worldwide and Norway has one of the highest fracture incidences in the world. The foundation of dense and strong bones is laid during childhood and adolescence. This thesis aimed to explore the influence of lifestyle factors, such as body weight and snuff use, on accumulation of bone minerals. The health surveys Fit futures I (2010-2011) and Fit Futures II (2012-2013) provided repeated bone mineral density measures of 688 adolescents between 15-19 years of age. We measured body weight and height, while information on lifestyle was collected by questionnaires. The results indicate that girls were approaching their peak bone mass, while the boys were still accumulating bone mass between 17 and 19 years of age. The influence of body weight was modest, but among boys with low weight, an increase could be beneficial for bone health. Use of snuff was associated with lower rate of bone accretion, particularly in boys.
