Bakhtins dialogiske perspektiv i barnehage og utdanning for barnehagelærere

Dr. Anja Maria Pesch og Kirsten Sivertsen Worum

Piaget’s theory and Education

Dr. Ioanna Palaiologou

Jean Piaget undoubtedly has been influential in the field of psychology and education. There is not a single textbook on cognitive or developmental psychology that does not include his theory. He is mostly known for the developmental stages he proposed where he claimed that children cannot be expected to understand certain concepts before they reach a given developmental level. Such a view has been heavily criticised as viewing the child as not being part of the social context and influenced by the impact of social interactions (e.g., Damon, 1981; Lubeck, 1996). Although Piaget’s research focused on individuals in a laboratory setting is important to note that his main interest was to try and explain the epistemology of how knowledge develops and how each of us creates our own knowledge through actions and not how the child develops. Also, it is misleading to criticise Piaget by implying he ignored the social factors as he stated from his earlier works ((Piaget 1950/1955) that:

`social life is a necessary condition for the development of logic’ (p. 120),

`social life transforms the very nature of the individual’ (p. 210), and

`that (the progress of) reason is due to social mechanisms’ (p. 199).

Continuing in his later work to emphasise the role of social factors:

In the realm of knowledge, it seems obvious that individual operations of the

intelligence and operations making for exchanges in cognitive cooperation are one and the same thing, the “general coordination of actions” to which we have continually referred being an interindividual as well as an intraindividual coordination because such “actions” can be collective as well as executed by individuals. (Piaget, 1967/1971, p. 360).

Thus, my intention in this presentation is to unpick some of the misinterpretations of his work that has led, especially in the English-speaking world, his impact in education to be less well noted. Based on his emphasis on the social factors and the two ideas from his theory - intellectual and moral autonomy and constructivism and not the stages of development - my aim is to discuss how these ideas are central to education. The presentation will focus on how education based on Piaget’s ideas can be shaped. Finally, I will offer an overview of education practices around his two main ideas of morality and adult-relationships, the three kinds of knowledge: physical, logico-mathematical and conventional arbitrary, in order to conclude that despite his critiques, his theory promotes a sociomoral atmosphere and feeling of community in education where children have agency.

Prof. Ole Henrik Hansen
