The supervisor's ethical responsibility - Voluntary workshop in research supervision: 2. April fra 9.15 – 10.45

The supervisor's ethical responsibility

Ethics in postgraduate supervision is a cornerstone of effective and responsible research guidance. As supervisors, it is imperative to understand and uphold ethical standards to ensure both the integrity of the supervisory relationship and the research process. This workshop serves as an introduction to the ethical considerations in postgraduate supervision, providing a solid foundation for fostering an ethical research environment

To introduce this important topic, we have invited Helene Ingierd, the General Director of the National Research Ethics Committees in Norway. Ingierd holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Oslo and has been a Research Fellow at the Peace Research Institute Oslo. She has worked in the field of research ethics and research integrity in different capacities for over fifteen years. Some of the questions she will address in her talk include:

  • What research ethical challenges arise with the role of the supervisor?
  • What responsibility do supervisors have for training and how can supervisors contribute to a good research ethics culture?
  • What training should supervisors receive in research ethics?

The structure of the workshops:

09.15     Welcome

09.20     Introduction: The supervisor's ethical responsibilities by Helene Ingierd

09.50     Get coffee

10.00     Discussion and wrap-up.

10.30     Goodbye!

  To prepare for the workshop:

  1. Think through the theme and your own experiences about what matters when it comes to ethics in research supervision - both from the Ph.D. – candidates' and supervisors' perspectives
  1. Reflect on:  How can we, as supervisors, colleagues, and leaders foster an ethically sound environment? See through UITs ethical guidelines for supervision and reflect on them in relation to your own practice, roles and expectations”  See also Guidelines for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the
