My research explores how law of the sea and international environmental law respond to emerging marine biotechnologies. I focus on genetically modified and gene-edited fish in marine aquaculture, asking how existing frameworks — including the Law of the Sea Convention, the Cartagena Protocol and EU/EEA law — regulate environmental risk, authorisation, monitoring and responsibility. The project examines whether these frameworks provide sufficiently clear rules for governing new biotechnologies in the marine environment, and what adequate regulation should require.
