On 30 May, the European Commission adopted its proposal for the future Creative Europe programme, recommending the budget of €1.85 billion for the 2021-2027 period, which is an increase by €390 million compared to the current budget. The proposal is part of the "Investing in people" chapter of the EU's long-term budget plan.

The structure of the next programme is visibly the continuation of the current two sub-programmes and a cross-sectoral strand:

  • MEDIA programme: €1.08 billion is proposed to fund audiovisual projects and sector in Europe (development, distribution and promotion of European films, TV programmes and video games);
  • Culture Programme: €609 million will be allocated to cultural and creative sector (cooperation projects, networks and platforms);
  • Cross Culture and MEDIA sectors action: €160 million will fund SMEs and other organisations working in both sectors (promoting cultural policy, free, diverse and pluralistic media environment, and supporting qualitative journalism and media literacy).
