Environmental Site Survey 2025
REMARCO team undertakes important research on the Tirpitz salvage site
REMARCO (Remediation, Management, Monitoring and Cooperation addressing North Sea UXO) is a European project funded by Interreg North Sea. Recently, REMARCO made a major contribution to the Tirpitz Site Project by undertaking an environmental survey of part of the site, which aligned with their other research.
The SeaTerra robot collected seabed samples that revealed heavy oil in the sand. Mussels were found next to WWII explosives. Laboratory tests on these, the first environmental samples since 2008, will provide important information that will be made public.
Thomas Hansen, a local diver and Tirpitz expert, was generous with his knowledge of the site and its contents. Thanks to the local landowner, we could drive the SeaTerra robot directly to the site. Local residents were keen to learn about the research and the team welcomed their questions, and local stories of the Tirpitz.

The Tirpitz Site Project is a joint research endeavour between UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute.
