A Visit to UiT Tromsø’s Solar Panel Installation Project

A trip to Tromsø from December 10th to 12th, 2024, focusing on visiting the solar panel installation project.

PhD candidate Rekik Desta Derso and NPA volunteer Hanife Ekinci from the Ar2CorD project traveled to Tromsø to visit the solar panel installation project at the UiT Tromsø campus. Before the travel, we had a meeting with the project coordinator, Clara Good, and she presented to us about the solar energy in Northern Norway projects on the campus. She explained the challenges of producing solar energy.

On our first day, we visited the UiT Tromsø Campus, known for its beautiful architecture and spacious layout. The emphasis was seeing the university’s solar panel installations, which reflect its focus on sustainability. Seeing how modern, renewable energy technology fits so well into the natural Arctic environment was impressive.

Walking through the campus, we appreciated how modern technology is thoughtfully integrated with the natural environment.

Next, we visited the National Art Museumand the curated exhibitions were captivating. A bonus: the complimentary coffee added a touch of warmth to our experience. At the Perspektivet Museum, we delved into thought-provoking exhibits centered on architecture and photography. From intricate 3D house models to evocative photographs. Our final museum of the day was the Polar Museum, an immersive dive into Arctic hunting history. The exhibits intensely captured the challenges of the past, though they also evoked sadness regarding the treatment of animals.

We began our final day with a visit to the Arctic Cathedral, a stunning modern architectural landmark that captures the spirit of the Arctic. Afterward, we wandered through Tromsø’s charming city center, stopping at various stores to shop for unique gifts and souvenirs. A hidden gem of the day was the Tromsø Library, where we found a cozy spot to unwind and reflect on our trip.

In general, Tromsø is a city that combines beautiful nature, rich culture, and clever architecture. Every moment felt special, from visiting interesting museums to admiring the Arctic Cathedral’s unique design. Whether tasting local food, looking at historic items, or simply strolling around, Tromsø left a lasting impression.
