Low Carbon Concrete for Arctic Climate with Excellent Sustainability and Durability

Ar2CorD Poster Presentation on Concrete Durability in Arctic Marine Conditions at the Midnight Sun Summit

PhD candidate Rekik Desta Derso presented research from the Ar2CorD project at the Midnight Sun Summit in Mathematics and Engineering, held from 15 to 19 June 2026.

The Midnight Sun Summit in Mathematics and Engineering brought together researchers from mathematics, engineering and related disciplines under the theme “Building Bridges Between Theory and Practice.” The conference highlighted recent scientific advances, encouraged interdisciplinary exchange and provided opportunities for researchers at different career stages to present and discuss their work. It also aimed to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and the international research community.

As part of the summit, Rekik Derso presented a poster from the Ar2CorD project on the design, installation and purpose of a long-term concrete durability monitoring station established at Narvik Harbour. The station was developed to investigate how low-carbon concrete performs under real Arctic marine conditions, with particular attention to freeze–thaw exposure, chloride ingress, moisture variation and corrosion-related processes.

Concrete samples are placed in atmospheric, tidal and submerged exposure zones. Some samples are equipped with embedded sensors that continuously monitor temperature, chloride concentration, pH, concrete resistance, steel potential and corrosion current.

   

The station became operational in December 2025 and is now collecting long-term field data. The results will support comparisons between natural exposure and laboratory testing and contribute to a better understanding of durable and sustainable concrete solutions for Arctic environments.
