New Open Access Book Reimagines Justice for the Ocean — With Young Voices at Its Heart

From Climate to Ocean Protection for a Just Future: Reimagining Justice with Care and Law (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026) is published today as the main scholarly outcome of bLYSs – Blue Catalyst, a UN Ocean Decade programme led by UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

Tromsø, July 2026 — What does justice mean when applied to the vast, interconnected realm of the Ocean? A new open access volume, From Climate to Ocean Protection for a Just Future: Reimagining Justice with Care and Law, published by Palgrave Macmillan, answers this question by bringing together law, care ethics, and the lived experiences of children and young people from Sinai to Tanzania to Brazil.

The book is the main scholarly result of bLYSs – Blue Catalyst. True to the programme's ethos of intergenerational co-creation, the volume is edited by a team spanning career stages and continents,  Zia Madani, Margherita Paola Poto, Youna McGowan, and Dana Ahmed, with senior and early-career researchers from Iran, Norway, Canada, Brazil, Italy and Egypt working side by side.

Across its chapters, the book traces the evolution from environmental and climate justice — through landmark cases such as Urgenda and KlimaSeniorinnen v. Switzerland — towards a distinct framework of Ocean justice: one grounded in relationality, care, and transgenerational responsibility, where grassroots advocacy and institutional mechanisms strengthen one another. Children and young people appear throughout not as case studies but as co-creators of knowledge, from the Asfour Initiative in Sinai to the Dream Fishers of Gaza, from a kindergarten community in Songea, Tanzania. Studies on water justice from Brazil enrich the perspectives on the interactions between social and institutional justice.
