Climate change is creating new challenges for aquaculture, affecting aquatic environments, production conditions and the communities and industries that depend on them. At the same time, the aquaculture sector plays an important role in reducing its environmental impact and developing more sustainable production practices.
Through a series of regional case studies, OCCAM examines how different aquaculture systems can respond to changing environmental conditions. The project combines scientific research with sector knowledge and experience to develop solutions that are practical, adaptable, and relevant to different local contexts.
Partners and related projects
OCCAM is led by the food research institute Nofima, in close collaboration with research groups at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Supported by the European Union, the project brings together 22 partners from research institutions, industry, the aquaculture sector and NGOs across 10 European countries. UiT leads Work Package 2 (WP2) and contributes to activities across Work Packages 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Through this broad involvement, UiT contributes to the project's research, development and implementation activities, supporting collaboration between science, industry and other stakeholders in developing climate-resilient and sustainable aquaculture.

UiT is also involved in MeCCAM, a related research project with a focus on climate adaptation in the European fishing industry. Led by the research centre Sjókovin in the Faroe Islands, MeCCAM brings together 16 partners from nine European countries to develop and explore climate adaptation measures for fisheries.
Both projects build on the experience of ClimeFish (2016–2020), a research project coordinated by UiT that brought together around 100 researchers from 16 countries to investigate the effects of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture and explore adaptation strategies.
