The Norwegian Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report shows that many Sámi experience that health services fail to meet their linguistic and cultural needs – contrary to their right to use Sámi in encounters with public services. To our knowledge, no language tests or aphasia tools exist in any Sámi language.

SÁMI-CAT is the first project to develop aphasia tests for North Sámi speakers. Its main aims are:

  1. to develop linguistic resources and aphasia assessment tools in North Sámi, and
  2. to build knowledge that supports better aphasia care in Sámi communities.

The project comprises four work packages (WPs):

  1. Development of a language technology infrastructure
  2. Adaptation of the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT)
  3. Development of a morphological test for North Sámi
  4. Piloting and norming tests in small, multilingual populations
