Dr. Tiantian Zhu joins SPRICE as a post-doctoral researcher

Tiantian Zhu, PhD, is the postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Technology and Safety, UiT, working on the SPRICE and SPRISK projects. Her research is focused on risk-informed decision-making for safe navigations in the Arctic waters, where rough sea and weather conditions, and severe meteorological phenomena, such as spray icing, are of great concerns.

Tiantian Zhu has received her PhD in Marine Technology in 2022 and her MSc in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) in 2017, both from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU. Dr. Zhu has a BSc degree in Safety Engineering from Central South University in China (2009-2013).

Her research journey began with the project Modelling Instantaneous Risk of Major Accident Prevention (MIRMAP), where she worked, as a master’s student and research assistant. Dr Zhu’s PhD research was focused on information and decision-making for major accident prevention. During her PhD, she developed the concept of information-based accident prevention strategy as a new risk-reducing barrier, where it involves creating a state of knowing and to reduce the probability of accidents and/or their consequence indirectly through decision-making, where the decision-makers are relevant actors in complex and dynamic sociotechnical systems.

She has also worked on human factors in autonomous shipping, reliability and availability analysis for power and propulsion system and communication system, sensors and data collection for collision avoidance, and data structure and dashboard design for Safety Integrity Level (SIL) follow up with user-oriented purposes. She has gained knowledge on Bayesian networks, uncertainty analysis, ML techniques, inherent safety, and maritime transportation risk, AIS data utilization. She has published her research results in several peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings.
