40 million for promising new cancer research: “This works!”
Nordlys: They all went through gruelling cancer treatments and relapses. Now, a new method could both save more lives and cause far fewer side effects.

THERACAN is a NOK 40 million research initiative at UiT and the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN), focusing on targeted radiotheranostics for cancer treatment. The method uses radioactive substances to locate cancer cells and deliver radiation directly to them, while limiting damage to healthy tissue. Three prostate cancer survivors interviewed have all experienced relapse and undergone demanding treatments such as surgery and extensive radiation therapy, leaving some with lasting side effects. They are optimistic about the new approach and its potential to make cancer treatment both more effective and less harmful. Clinical studies will explore its use against several cancer types, particularly advanced and metastatic cancers.
