Norwegian Polar Politics, 1870-2014
Polar history has a significant role to play in Norwegian history. It is applicable in areas such as politics, science and business activity; it also acts as a powerful reservoir for national symbols. Indeed, polar issues – especially those relating to “the North” – constitute an important part of Norwegian culture. With an increasing global awareness of the Polar Regions, a collective presentation of Norwegian policies relating to the High North is of great consequence, enabling interests, strategies and ways of thinking to be charted and debated.
The project is headed by professor Einar-Arne Drivenes at the University of Tromsø. He will, in cooperation with Stian Bones, also be responsible for editing the main outcome of this project, a book on the history of Norwegian polar politics. The book "Norwegian Polar Policy 1870-2014”, which will be published in two editions, one English edition, and one Norwegian.
