Thesis: Development of a screening protocol for depression in antenatal clinics in Malawi

Mr Chorwe-Sungani conducted a sequential multimethod research study to improve screening of depression in antenatal care in Malawi. The study confirmed the high prevalence of antenatal depression among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Blantyre district. The research identified validated low resource setting antenatal depression screening instruments, confirmed that the performance of these instruments varied in the local setting, and identified that combination of the 3-item screener and Self Reporting Questionnaire were optimal for multistage screening of depression in local antenatal clinics without increasing the workload of midwives. These findings resulted in the development of a new screening protocol for depression which is integrated into usual antenatal care.
