Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the formation of a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs or the lungs. The blood test D-dimer is a marker for clot formation and has been a central part of the diagnostic of VTE in the last decades. Today, D-dimer has several application areas, reflecting different aspects of the disease. In this thesis, we have investigated the use of D-dimer in the diagnostics of blood clots in the legs and the relationship between D-dimer and the future risk of both first-time and recurrent VTE.
Using study participants from the University Hospital of Northern Norway, the Tromsø study, and the Venous Thrombosis Registry in Østfold Hospital, we have demonstrated the diversity of D-dimer. In these studies, we have shown that D-dimer may be used alone in the diagnostic of blood clots in the legs and that participants with higher D-dimer have an increased risk of future VTE. The proposed strategies in this thesis have the potential to improve the current management of VTE.
