CANS seminar by Associate professor, Pauline Cavanagh: Staphylococcus borealis - The new kid on the block

Welcome to a CANS seminar presented by:

Associate professor, Pauline Cavanagh

Title of presentation: Staphylococcus borealis - The new kid on the block

Abstract:

When analysing a large cohort of Staphylococcus haemolyticus by whole genome sequencing, five isolates with aberrant genotypic traits were identified. The five isolates were initially speciated as S. haemolyticus based on 16S rRNA and MALDI-TOF. We pursued the idea that they were differed enough from S. haemolyticus, to constitute a new species. In 2020, we published the description of a new staphylococcal species, Staphylococcus borealis. In this seminar I will present S. borealis, the new kid on the block, what it takes to classify and describe a new species and our ongoing investigations into the clinical and microbiological relevance of S.borealis.
