MUS-3400 Artistic spesialization - Principal instrument - 20 ECTS

Type of course

Obligatory course for students studying on the Master in music performance. Cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

Course content

Rehearsing and performance of a broad repertoire, according to the student's interests and personal musical preferences. The student's own role in the development on artistic and instrumental skills is central to the course. The repertoire will be planned together with the instrument teacher and other performers (accompanist, band/ensembles). Participation in ensembles and concerts at the Academy of Music.

Objectives of the course

After completing the course the student will have the following competences:

Knowledge:

  • ability to apply relevant knowledge to analyse artistic intentions
  • ability to evaluate artistic intentions within the student's choice of specialisation
  • an advanced knowledge of repertoire, performance traditions, and artistic practice within the student's area of specialisation

Skills:

  • ability to realise and convey artistic intentions
  • ability to apply relevant knowledge and methods in the evaluation of the student's own performance competences and their profile as a performer
  • ability to reflect over and justify choice of methods in the student's own artistic research

Competences:

  • familiarity with current quality standards within the student's principal instrument and specialisation
  • high awareness of current quality standards within the student's principal instrument and specialization
  • ability to identify relevant ethical questions

Language of instruction and examination

English and Norwegian.

Teaching methods

Instruction and supervision will take place individually and in groups. Considerable independent practice and artistic work. Ensemble performance and participation in projects and ensembles at the Academy of Music.

  • Midway performance in the form of a concert or equivalent artistic format (approx. 30 minutes)
