PSY-3023 Research practice in psychology - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course is reserved for students who are admitted to the master's program in psychology and is therefore not intended as a single subject. The course does not fit in the first semester of the Master program.Research Practice takes place at the Department of Psychology, and the subject can be taken either in the spring or fall semester.

Course content

The purpose of the course is to give students an introduction to and experience with research methods that are relevant to developing and expanding research competence.

Practice Experiences that may be relevant include (but are not limited to):

  • Systematic literature search
  • Basic exploration of a current problem
  • Development of new research instruments
  • Specialisation in the use of specific research methods
  • Introduction to and practice with specialized analysis techniques and computer programs
  • Communication of results at the level of a journal article in APA style

The work shall relate to content a professional (topic supervisor) at the institute or from another unit approved by the master committee has the opportunity to provide guidance for.

The purpose of the course is to give students a broader knowledge of research traditions beyond what they use in their master thesis. The practice will thus complement work on the master thesis with practical experience in other psychology-based research traditions. Work can not be included directly in the master thesis.

Student and research practice supervisor together put together learning outcomes descriptions, a reading list, a plan for working with the curriculum and schedule for the semester. The work with the research practice course consists mainly of practice work, but also other ways of working may be included. Guidelines from Faculty of Health Sciences for the content and learning outcomes descriptions follows the course application.

Two or more students can add up the same curriculum research practice and be supervised together. Students are encouraged to collaborate on the Research Practice course where appropriate.

Research Practice is equivalent to 120 hours of work (corresponding, for example, every day for four weeks or two days a week over 10 weeks).


Objectives of the course

Learning outcomes descriptions are an important part of the contract between you, the supervisor and the examiner. They form the assessment basis for the examiner reading the exam work and should be written according to the requirements of the Health Sciences Faculty (see further in the template for specific information regarding expectations).Focus on research practice is agreed between supervisor and student and sought approval of master Committee by January 15th or August 25th.

Assume purpose of the topic and how it should be evaluated for the design of learning outcomes descriptions in the approval application.Ensure that learning outcomes descriptions are (1) at a sufficiently high level to Master's work and (2) that they are concrete.


Language of instruction and examination

English.

Exam can be answered in Norwegian, Danish, Swedish or English.


Teaching methods

The course involves mainly guided practice work. Subject supervisor must say they are willing to give at least 10 hours of supervision in connection with the task, and it is not normally offered more than 15 hours of supervision per theme. Several students can receive guidance together when working on the same topic. If other forms of education shall be included it must be specified.

Re-sit examination

Students who do not pass the previous ordinary examination can gain access to a re-sit examination. Only parts that are not passed must be retaken.
