More information regarding PhD courses at the Faculty of Science and Technology is found here.
The course has a limited capacity of students, depending on the places available onboard the ship.
If there are more applicants than available places in the course, students will be prioritized in the following order:
1. PhD students at the PhD program in Science at UiT - The Arctic University of Tromsø
2. PhD students at other PhD programs at UiT - The Arctic University of Tromsø
3. PhD students at other universities
Course content
This course is based on cruises with RV Helmer Hanssen in the waters of Svalbard, the Fram Strait or the Arctic Ocean. "Hot" international research topics and research questions relevant to AMGG will be studied in groups.
The course will cover the following subjects: ocean water masses including sea-ice melting, sea-ice build up and brine formation; the dynamics of the ocean floor and its subsurface; fluid flow escape features; marine geohazards, modern and fossil ecosystems; paleoceanography, paleoclimate and glacial history.
Teaching methods
This course will provide a stimulating mix of fieldwork, lectures, and tutorials, supported by computer-aided learning, and independent study. Modern instruments for acquisition of acoustic data and sediment sampling will be demonstrated, including i.e. multibeam echo sounder; piston and multi core systems. Following discussions in the trainee school and specific preparation for specific topics, the students will have daily lectures on board, obtain supervision during the field work and have continuous, daily discussions about the obtained results. A few months after the cruise the results will be presented to the AMGG research school during common meetings.Assessment
