Anita Movik Simensen

Associate Professor at the Department of Education

Job description

I hold a PhD in mathematics education and my research interests are in critical mathematics education. I am interested in exploring how positioning and power structures regulate mathematical learning opportunities. In my doctoral project, I investigated this for students considered low achieving in mathematics, and currently I am investigating this for migrational and Indigenous contexts.

    Research interests

    My research interests are:

    1) Critical mathematics education in Indigenous and minority contexts.

    2) Inclusive mathematics education and adapted teaching. Here I am interested in both:

    • students experiencing mathematics difficulties
    • gifted students and science talents

    3) Nature as learning space for mathematics in kindergarten and primary school.

    Current research projects:

The MIM-project (Mathematics Education in Indigenous and Migrational Contexts). In this project, we will investigate how different languages and cultures can prevent, support or challenge learning in mathematics. We are particularly concerned with classrooms where there are many different languages and cultures, including Norwegian.

    Previous projects:

LiMa - Learning opportunities in Mathematics for all, my PhD-project where I am investigating mathematical learning opportunities in groupwork for 8. Graders who are considered low performing in mathematics.

ROM - a project where we study gifted students' mathematical reasoning when working with peers in their regular classroom and when working with other gifted students at the national talent centres.
