Trude Nergård-Nilssen
Job description
My courses cover dyslexia, developmental language disorder (DLD), difficulties with reading comprehension, and various interventions for managing challenges in reading, writing, and language. Students enrolled in these courses stay updated with the latest research, equipping them to implement evidence-based methods in their teaching and support for children, adolescents, and adults facing learning difficulties.
My research interests mainly focus on developmental language disorders and dyslexia. I am dedicated to uncovering the underlying mechanisms of these language-cognitive conditions by exploring their characteristics and origins. Much of my work involves investigating reading-related cognitive challenges and the complex interplay between language skills and reading abilities.
I am currently leading a large randomised controlled trial. The overarching aim is to contribute to evidence-based research on improving interventions targeting children and adolescents struggling with decoding and reading comprehension. I aim to contribute to educational psychology and special education through my research and teaching. I aim to equip future special educators, speech and language therapists, psychologists, and teachers with the knowledge and tools to provide optimal support to individuals with language difficulties and dyslexia.
I have developed innovative tools for screening and diagnosing dyslexia, facilitating the identification and assessment of reading and writing difficulties and underlying language and cognitive skills across the age range of 5 to 90 years. The technology behind Dysmate is owned by UiT the Arctic University of Norway. Meanwhile, the company Literate AS holds a licensing agreement with UiT, granting exclusive rights to commercialise the tests and handbook.
