🔬 Incoming exchange students: how to apply for internship, research or thesis project
The Traineeship Programme gives students the opportunity to complete an internship, research project, or thesis placement at UiT while remaining enrolled at their home institution. Traineeships can last between 2 and 12 months.
🧑⚕️ Traineeships in clinical medicine and healthcare
Students applying for traineeships in clinical medicine or healthcare (e.g. Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Paramedics, Physiotherapy, or Social Education) must follow separate application procedures and should not use the application routes described below.
📌 Choose the correct application category before you begin
You must apply through one category only.
- Nominated Erasmus+ Trainee – your home institution has an Erasmus+ exchange agreement with UiT and has nominated you through the UiT Partner Portal.
- Guest (Independent) Erasmus+ Trainee – your home institution does not have an exchange agreement with UiT, but you have secured a supervisor at UiT.
- Grant / Scholarship-funded Traineeship – you are funded through Erasmus+ Global, INTPART, NORPART, NOTED, UTFORSK, or another scholarship programme coordinated by a partner institution or project.

This section is intended for nominated Erasmus+ trainees from partner institutions that have an exchange agreement with UiT. If your home institution is not a UiT partner institution, please use the Guest (Independent) Traineeship section below to submit your application.

Step 1: Speak with your Erasmus+ Coordinator back home
Before planning your traineeship, contact your Erasmus+ Coordinator or the International Office at your home institution to confirm whether you can be nominated to UiT. Traineeship places are allocated by your home institution and depend on the availability of Erasmus+ funding.
Step 2: Get nominated by your home institution to UiT
You must be nominated before applying. Nominations must be submitted electronically by the Erasmus+ Coordinator or International Office at your home institution through the UiT Partner Portal.
Nomination deadlines
- 15 October for traineeships starting in the spring semester (January - June).
- 15 April for traineeships starting in the autumn semester (August - December).
Step 3: Check your eligibility
To apply, you must:
- Be enrolled in a degree program at a university with an Erasmus Charter.
- Have B2 or C1 level English proficiency (CEFR).
- Be from one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries.
- Be physically present and actively participate in the traineeship.
- If you’ve graduated, you must have been selected during your final year and complete the traineeship within one year of graduation.
Traineeship duration
- Minimum: 2 months.
- Maximum: 1 academic year (two semesters) per study cycle (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD).
- Note: Semesters do not need to be consecutive.
Step 4: Find a supervisor
Important: You must have a confirmed supervisor before submitting your application.
Before submitting your application, make sure the following has been arranged:
- ✅ Your Erasmus+ Coordinator or Traineeship Supervisor at your home institution has contacted the relevant faculty at UiT.
- ✅ A supervisor at UiT has been identified and agreed upon.
- ✅ The scope and duration of your traineeship have been discussed and approved.
- ✅ Your UiT supervisor has agreed to supervise your traineeship.
- ✅ Your UiT supervisor is ready to review and sign your Learning Agreement.
Step 5: Prepare your application documents
Before logging in to Søknadsweb, make sure you have the following documents ready for upload:
- ✅ A completed and signed Learning Agreement for Traineeships.
- 🆔 A copy of your passport (or national ID card for EU/EEA citizens).
- 📄 Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- 📑 Your latest Transcript of Records.

Housing is limited. We strongly recommend applying for a single room as early as possible.

Step 8: Arrange insurance
UiT does not provide insurance, so you must arrange your own coverage before arriving in Norway.
- Health insurance for medical expenses.
- Accident and liability insurance.
- Travel insurance including emergency repatriation.

Step 9: Residence permit and visa information
🌍 Information for non-EU/EEA citizens
Traineeships lasting more than 90 days may require a residence permit and additional documentation from your UiT supervisor.
Unless your supervisor can provide the required documentation, we recommend limiting your traineeship to a maximum of 90 days.
Students who already hold a valid residence permit in another Schengen country may normally stay in Norway for a traineeship of up to 90 days without applying for a Norwegian residence permit.

Residence permit and visa information
🌍 Citizenship Considerations: For Non-EU/EEA Applicants
Due to visa restrictions for students who hold citizenship from countries outside the EU/EEA, we recommend that the traineeship period does not exceed 3 months (90 days). This helps avoid unnecessary complications related to visa categories such as “Research with own funds” and “Trainees,” unless you meet all the requirements and your supervisor at UiT is willing to provide the necessary documentation for the visa application.
Note: Students who already hold a valid residence permit in a Schengen country may travel to Norway for a traineeship without a visa, provided that the traineeship does not exceed 3 months (90 days). For questions, please contact: 📧 Email: mobility@uit.no

You must be nominated before applying. Nominations must be submitted electronically by your home institution or the relevant programme coordinator at UiT through the Partner Portal.

- Meet the language requirements of the host department (normally B2-C1 level English proficiency according to the CEFR scale).
- Meet the eligibility requirements of your scholarship or mobility programme.
- Be physically present and actively participate in the traineeship at UiT.
- If you are applying as a recent graduate, you must have been selected during your final year of studies and complete the traineeship within one year of graduation.
