How are resources used in society, and how should they be used? This is the big issue in economics.
The Master's Degree program in Economics provides a deeper understanding of theoretical and applied economic analysis, methodology and empirical research. Students will have the opportunity to work independently through self-study and assignments.

Er du matematisk og analytisk anlagt, og ønsker å spesialisere deg på å løse og å forstå problemstillinger som berører samfunnsrelaterte temaer?

Master i samfunnsøkonomi gir deg verktøyene for å klare dette. 

The programme consists of advanced courses in Microeconomics, which also includes the use of linear algebra and static optimization. Macroeconomics includes the analysis of open economies and economic growth. This program offers a course in Econometrics - Advanced Quantitative Methods for Economics. There is also a specialization course in Resource Economics and Applied Microeconomics. These courses are compulsory. In the fall semester of the second year the students will take the course SOK-3050, which is oriented towards self-study and writing a term paper. In addition, there are courses in Advanced Finance and in Empirical Market Analysis. The Master's Thesis constitutes 30 ECTS, and will be carried out during one semester.

The Master's Degree programme in Economics will provide a deeper understanding of theoretical and applied economic analysis, methodology and empirical research. The programme also provides a basis for independent scientific work.

A Master's candidate is expected to have advanced and comprehensive knowledge of economic methodology, theories, concepts and relevant scientific approaches. The candidates who complete the programme are expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes, defined by general competence, knowledge and skills.


  • extensive and broad knowledge of economic theory as well as solid skills in mathematical and econometric methods; in accordance with national and international standards in economics.
  • should have acquired comprehensive knowledge at a high level in applied and theoretical economics


  • find and evaluate relevant sources in a critical manner, and should further be able to generate independent assessments and develop projects.
  • present information and ideas in an instructive manner to both researchers and the general public.
  • formulate relevant research questions in an independent manner, and analyze large amounts of information by applying economic models and quantitative methods in line with scientific and ethical standards.
  • participate in and lead projects and contribute to research activities.
  • carry out analytical and management tasks as well as assume responsibility for such tasks in knowledge-intensive environments, such as private businesses, government and NGOs.

 General Competence:

  • acquired in-depth and specialized disciplinary competence through their education.
  • Have a sufficient foundation to participate in research projects and embark on doctoral studies
  • analyse economic issues that require skills at a high level.
  • apply their knowledge and skills in economic theory and methods in new areas to perform advanced tasks and projects.

Admission to the Master`s programme in Economics requires a Bachelor`s degree (180 ECTS) in Economics or an equivalent qualification. Regarded as equivalent can be a Bachelor's degree in another field which includes at least 80 ECTS in Economics.

A Master's Degree in Economics qualifies graduates for positions in research institutions, public administration, organisations and private companies. Economists work in many fields, within management, financial management and planning, analysis of economic development and the effects of economic measures. There are also professional opportunities within the media and education.
UIT The Arctic University of Norway offers organized research education of 180 ECTS. The PhD programme can be completed in three years.

Bachelor og master i samfunnsøkonomi

Jeg jobber for tiden i Norges sjømatråd. Jeg startet i Norges sjømatråd høsten 2013 i en internship stilling, men jobber nå fast her som systemutvikler/analytiker. Jeg jobber hovedsakelig med markedsinformasjon og statistikk. Blant annet jobber jeg nå med et prosjekt der vi utvikler nye systemer for markedsinformasjon og statistikk ut mot sjømatnæringen.

Jeg kommer opprinnelig fra Finland, men flyttet til Norge i 2007. Etter å ha jobbet her i nord et år ville jeg gjerne studere, og da ble HHT et naturlig valg for meg. Jeg synes HHT har et bra utvalg av studieretninger innenfor økonomi.

Jeg trivdes veldig godt ved HHT. Jeg følte at kontakten mellom foreleserne og studentene var bra, og fikk god hjelp med både veiledning og spørsmål som dukket opp i løpet av studietiden. Jeg var også involvert i studentorganisasjoner i løpet av min tid ved HHT og opplevde at jeg fikk mye igjen for dette.
