The Centre for Sami Studies (SESAM) is an organisational unit equivalent to an Institute within the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The role of SESAM is to promote and strengthen multi-disciplinary research and education related to Sami and other indigenous peoples within the University, and to increase recruitment of staff and students interested in such studies. SESAM maintains a lively network of partners in Indigenous Studies locally and around the globe.
Mandate
- to promote and strengthen multi-disciplinary research and education related to Sami and other indigenous peoples
- to promote the study of Sami language, Sami culture and Sami and other indigenous peoples
- to disseminate information about ethnic studies at UiT The Arctic University of Norway
- to promote the use and knowledge of Sami language throughout the University
- to encourage collaboration between the University and other institutions where Sami language and culture is studied and taught
- to advise and support the University and the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education in questions relating to Sami and other indigenous peoples
