Department of Social Education

Norsk flagg

The Department of Social Education in Harstad has a long tradition and formed the basis of what was to become the University College in Harstad in 1983. In 2016, Harstad University College was merged with UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and the Department of Social Education became part of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2018.

The Department focuses on the inclusion of vulnerable groups, irrespective of disability, gender, skin colour and cultural background. The Norwegian welfare society is built on solidarity and the will to give and to share. The principles that all humans inherently have dignity and equality are fundamental values in today’s Social Educators’ work.

The department’s academic environment consists of and provides a wide range of academic and professional perspectives. Education and research put their emphasis specifically on the inclusion of persons and groups in vulnerable positions. The Department of Social Education is located at UiT in Harstad but offer activities in the three northern-most counties. We offers a Bachelor’s programme, both full-time and part-time, a Master’s programme, further education, and a PhD course. We provide student placements in most parts of Northern Norway. It is possible for students to travel abroad as part of their student placements or a student exchange.
