Oro-Maxillofacial Health and Epidemiology

This research group aims to support research on oral health and epidemiology.

Oro-Maxillofacial health consists of Cariology, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics). Epidemiology is the study and analysis of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare.

Our  focuses, visions, values and overall goals are identical with Strategy plan of the faculty 2014-2020. High quality research is necessary to enable high quality of theoretical and clinical teaching, which will also improve oral health services of the population. The establishment of good leadership and responsibility of the senior academic staff towards the junior staff are the basis of productivity, effectiveness and good work environment.

UiT is the most northern University in the world. Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Clinical Dentistry has a compact locality with the whole university with its interdisciplinary and cooperative staff. The faculty has a high number of doctoral students and good theoretical courses are available for these -6 PhD students of this group. University has prioritised medical research and Community Medicine in its long-term research strategy. Oral health research should be integrated to general health research and a good cooperation with the Department of Community Medicine is crucial in the progress of research in this group.
