Topics of research:

  • Studies of circulatory effects of accidental - and therapeutic hypothermia and re-warming lead by Professor Torkjel Tveita. Complementary studies of molecular biology are taking place in collaboration with the Department of Biophysics and Bioengineering, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MI, USA.Figure 2.   • Studies of the pathophysiology - and treatment of sepsis and acute lung injury chaired by Professor Lars J. Bjertnaes. Clinical studies based on the results of the animal experiments are taking place at the collaborating institutions in Arkhangelsk, Russian Federation, City Hospital No#1 and Northern State Medical University under the leadership of Professor Mikhail Y. Kirov.
     
  • Studies of pre-hospital medicine at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN), Tromsø, are conducted by Professor Mads Gilbert and Associate Professor Knut Fredriksen and at Hammerfest Hospital by Professor Torben Wisborg. These researchers are focusing in a national perspective on pre-hospital treatment of heart infarction and multi-trauma. Internationally, Gilbert and Wisborg manage projects aimed at increasing the potential of life-saving first aid among victims of war and persecution in the poor part of the world. The Tromsø Mine Victim Resource Center, the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Tromsø, is a fruit of this activity.
